Autumn Safety Tips

As we move into winter, the evenings are getting darker and the nights are getting longer. With Halloween and Bonfire Night celebrations happening over the next couple of weeks, we have put together some security and safety tips to help you ensure that you, your friends and family, and your property are protected.
External Lighting: if your home or business has external lights, make sure they are switched on and set with a motion sensor or timer where possible to deter intruders.
Overgrown Plants: cut back any overgrown trees and bushes around your property to improve visibility and reduce potential hiding spots.
Security Systems: if your home or business has security measures such as doorbell cameras or CCTV, displaying signage advertising this can reduce the chances of being targeted.
Someone's Home: whether there are people in or not, keep all doors and windows secured and have internal lights on so the property appears occupied. If you wish to avoid trick-or-treaters, rather than turning lights off use signs (sometimes provided by local police) and remove any external seasonal decorations.
Out and About: if you are trick-or-treating or attending seasonal events, take a high-powered torch with you, stay in familiar, well-lit, pedestrianised areas and only go out with people you know and trust. If you will be away from your property for any period of time do not share it on public platforms such as social media.
Outdoor Decorations: if you have any external seasonal decorations secure them in place to prevent them being moved or stolen, and ensure they do not block any cameras or other security measures you may have.
Bins and Letterboxes: if you have external bins or mailboxes ensure they are blocked and/or hidden from sight to prevent theft, vandalism, or other damage.
Trick-or-Treaters: keep all trick-or-treating activities at the door - do not invite strangers into your property or enter the home of someone you do not know.
Local Groups: for information about events or any concerns in your area, join local forums or social media groups and follow neighbourhood watch pages.
Fire Safety: if you are hosting a bonfire or fireworks display, keep all sources of fire (including sparklers) away from your property and other people. Have buckets of sand and water nearby at all times.
We hope these tips will help you enjoy the seasonal festivities safely and responsibly while keeping your homes, businesses, and friends and family protected!
