Security Hints & Tips
General Domestic Security Tips
Front Door
This is normally the final exit door and should be fitted with a mortise lock
to British Standards, or a rim automatic deadlock.
Fit a security chain or door viewer to give added security when answering
the door to callers.
Don’t admit callers until identity has been established to your satisfaction.
The use of an external light controlled by an internal switch is useful.
Back Door
If this is used as the final exit door, door locks should be fitted as for
the front door. Alternatives are to fit similar locks to both doors which
can be keyed alike for the convenience of the occupiers, or to supplement
the existing lock by fitting key operated mortise bolts, these bolts should
be fitted 12” from the top and bottom of each door.
Patio Doors
Each moving door should be fitted with key operated locks at the top and bottom.
Windows
All ground floor windows and fan lights, together with any others which are
accessible from flats roofs and down pipes, should be fitted with suitable
locks which will depend on the type of window, a good DIY store or locksmith
will show the type of locks available.
Please note when considering overall protection your local fire prevention
officer is always available to give advice.
